Data Investigator is an IBM mainframe application that scans multiple source code libraries and builds a consolidated index of items in that repository.

The iterative scanning of source libraries that normally occurs when scoping the impact of a change is replaced by iterative scanning of the repository's index, bringing relief from the elapsed time and CPU usage penalties that accompany the former.  The larger the source code repository, the greater the benefit.

Being a self-populating dictionary and enquiry system, Data Investigator makes a powerful

tool in the areas of software auditing and quality assurance, as well as software development.

Data Investigator was developed by Platypus Software and acquired by Executive Computing in 1996.  It is currently marketed in Australia and New Zealand by Excentor Pty Ltd.
